Lesson 3.2: Failure to check for warpage or damage

Mistake #2: Failure to check for warpage or damage

Warpage and Surface damage are probably the most overlooked item on this list. It is easy to overtighten and warp engine component covers if they are stamped steel or thin aluminum components. Most of us will overlook the potential issue quite often, UNTIL the vehicle comes back with a leak. Another cause is cleaning the surface incorrectly such as using a surface conditioning disc, razor blade, and/or scraper carelessly and damaging the surface. This can scratch the metal surfaces and create a leak path. Use a plastic scraper or nylon brush. If you have to use a metal scraper or metal razor blade, be very careful not to damage the mating surface.
