What are Thread Sealants? What is their purpose? Why do we need them?

Thread Sealants are designed to take up airspace in between threaded connections for the purpose of preventing air or fluids to escape through the connections. A few other things they need to do are lubricate threads to reduce friction, galling and binding, prevent corrosion, and resist vibrations. The most common types are tapes, paste, and anaerobic. Some of these are more common in household and commercial plumbing, some are more specific such as gas lines, large diameter pipes, high pressure, or high temperature applications. In this training we will concentrate on automotive uses.
